How to Apply Splat Hair Dye

Believe it or not, your application technique and the nature of your hair are the two most important properties influencing the longevity of splat hair dye on your hair.

There’s not much you can do about the nature of your hair, but the application technique is completely in your hands. Here’s a guide to applying splat hair dye on your hair to eke out maximum longevity:

1. Run Allergy Strand and Patch Test

An allergy test is the first step to a successful dye application if it’s your first time using splat hair dye. As its name implies, the point is to test if the dye will cause any allergic reactions upon application.

To do patch and strand tests, apply the dye to some strands of your hair (somewhere hidden and close to the scalp) and apply little to the back ear.

After that, wait for about 20 minutes; if nothing strange happens, you can proceed with applying the dye.

2. Prevent Dye Stains

Dye staining is a real issue with splat dyes, and you want to take proactive measures to ensure that’s not a problem for you after application. Thankfully, preventing dye stains while using splat dyes is pretty simple: you only need to follow the steps below:

  • Cover your workspace with paper or old towel to prevent staining.
  • Put on an old t-shirt and a pair of disposable hand gloves.
  • Protect your hairline, ear, and neck with petroleum jelly or oil ( Do this when you want to apply color)

2. Bleach Your Hair

Splat hair dyes work best when you bleach your hair before applying them, as the colors look brighter and last longer when you lighten your hair before applying the dye. Thankfully, you won’t have to worry about buying bleach separately; the Splat Hair Color kit comes with bleach in the box.

Thanks to the included bleach, all you have to do is mix the oxide (liquid Lightner) and the powder (lightening bleach decolorant) thoroughly and apply the mixture to your dry hair.

Check periodically to see the bleach level and rinse it off once it lightens your hair to a desirable shade (30 minutes maximum). If you have no idea what the perfect shade for dyeing is, you may have to seek the help of a hairstylist or colorist for your first few hairstyles.

While the results of using bleach can be enticing, you want to moderate its use, as it has damaging side effects on both your hair and your scalp. Splat also recommends leaving half an inch of hair between your scalp and the bleached area to avoid irritation.

4. Part the Hair into Sections

From here on out, you can adopt whatever coloring method has been working for you with dyes. Personally, I prefer parting my hair into sections before applying the dye, but you don’t have to do it this way of course.

If you have a separate technique you have been using, feel free to continue with the method.

But if you want to try this method, divide your hair into four sections and hold each section with a clip before applying dye.

6. Apply the hair dye

Before you apply the dye, make sure you shake the dye bottle very well to obtain a consistent mixture. You also want make sure your hair is dry, as splat hair dye works best on dry hair.

To apply the dye, pour it into a bowl and apply the color using a brush, or cover the dye bottle with the applicator tip and apply.

If you’re using the sections technique, apply the dye section by section.

After that, cover hair with a shower cap and let the dye stay on your hair for 40- 60 minutes. But if it starts itching or hurting you otherwise, rinse it off immediately. You shouldn’t experience any discomfort if you observed the path test from step 1, but it happens.

Rinse with cold water after the dye sets.

Tips to Make Splat Hair Dye Last Longer

Applying your hair dye excellently is only the tip of the iceberg; you’ll need a bit more than that to make your color last very long. Here are some aftercare tips to try to make splat hair dye last longer:

  • If your current set of haircare products are incompatible with splat dyes, you may have to change them. When buying haircare products, indicate you have color treated hair to get what’s most appropriate for you.
  • Always rinse with cold water after applying the dye. Warm or hot water will cause chemical reactions that will break down the chemicals and wash the colors off; you don’t want that.
  • Minimize the use of heating tools; they affect your dyed hair in a similar way to hot water.
  • Wash your hair periodically. Dirt buildup can do as much damage to dyed hair as hot water, and nobody like the look or smell of dirty hair anyway.
  • Avoid exposing your hair to excess water. You can achieve this by protecting your hair with a silk or satin scarf before bathing or when taking a swim.

Keep in mind that some colors fade faster than the others, regardless of your application technique or maintenance tips.

FAQs & Conclusion

How long does splat last without bleach?

The dye can last for up to four weeks without bleach, but it generally won’t look as adorable as it would with bleach, even immediately after application. Using bleach is the recommended way to apply splat, and unless you’re avoiding damage to your hair or scalp, you should always consider using it.

Will Splat hair dye wash out?

Splat dyes are semi-permanent and will fade gradually with multiple washes, so that’s generally nothing to worry about. If you need to keep reapply the dye, consider skipping bleaching every so often; it’s the most damaging aspect of using the dye.
